Homemade Butter and Johnny Cakes


We have been studying the early formation of the American colonies for the past couple of weeks.  Today we decided to make homemade butter and Johnny Cakes to see how the colonists ate.  We had mixed results.  The butter got a thumbs up but the kids didn’t like the Johnny Cakes.  I think that the molasses was a little strong for them.  If we try it again I think we will use honey instead.

This book was originally from Scholastic.  I have the e-book version.  I’m not sure that it is still in print, but I have seen copies available from online used booksellers.  It has other great activities as well.
